DESIGNERS COMPETE TO SECURE PRESTIGIOUS

JEWELLERY AWARDS

Dubai International Jewellery Week Design Awards recognise and reward emerging and professional talent in the industry

Dubai: Dubai International Jewellery Week, the Middle East’s most influential jewellery event, has given designers from across the world the opportunity to showcase their talents and compete for some of the most prestigious titles in the industry in their 5th Jewellery Design Awards.

Attracting both amateur and professional designers, the awards recognise and reward excellence in the field of jewellery design, innovation and creativity.

Winning designs will be manufactured and displayed by the National Institute of Vocational Education during Dubai International Jewellery Week, which runs from 4 to 7 December 2013 at Dubai World Trade Centre. The winners will also walk away with a trophy and prizes awarded by GIA Middle East, the world’s foremost authority in gemology.

The competition, which has steadily grown over the years, is a trademark of the four-day show which brings together manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and industry professionals who are looking to establish relationships worldwide and come face-to-face with buyers in this highly lucrative region.

With more than 500 submissions for the competition this year and entries from Bulgaria, India, Libya, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and more, the awards provide an invaluable platform for emerging talent to gain access to the vast jewellery retail market through their design capabilities.

Ms. Nirupa Bhatt, Managing Director, GIA in India & Middle East commented: “Jewellery design is the creative soul of our industry. Because of this importance, GIA has expanded its jewellery design education programmes, keeping to same global education standards in all locations.

“We are pleased to support DIJW and its endeavour to encourage design talent in the region. The GIA design class in Dubai has shown tremendous talent and potential, and we support their participation in these awards.”

Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice President, Dubai World Trade Centre, the organisers of Dubai International Jewellery Week, added: “With creativity and design at the heart of the 2013 Dubai Jewellery Design Awards, we provide an outstanding opportunity for emerging jewellery designers to showcase their creative talents.

“As the most influential jewellery exhibition in the Middle East, the awards will be even bigger and better this year, with new categories, new supporting partners and a critically acclaimed panel of leading industry judges.”

Submissions are currently being evaluated by a highly-qualified international jury who will reveal the winning designs on 18 November.

The awards consists of 9 categories with Emerging Designer categories including Arabic Influenced Jewellery Design, Asian Influenced Jewellery Design, Innovative Jewellery Design Award and Emirati Jewellery Designer of the Year, open to local aspiring UAE national designers. The Professional Designers categories include the Bridal Jewellery Set Design, the Objet D’Art Award and the Emirati Jewellery Designer of the Year.

Giving jewellers and professional designers a further chance to shine, the Dubai Jewellery Design Awards 2013 has introduced the Futuristic Jewellery Award and CAD/CAM Technology Award to acknowledge the best use of creativity and technological know-how.

The judges will evaluate entries based on the originality, creativity and innovation of the design, the practicality of producing the actual piece and the wear-ability of the finished product.

The winners will collect their trophies at a prestigious Awards ceremony on 5 December 2013.

Last year’s winner of the Professional Category – Innovative Jewellery Design Award, Mr. Vivek Tiwari, is a young designer from India who has entered the competition again this year in the hope of securing the award for the second time running.

Mr Tiwari, Designer for Blue Stone, said: “Winning the award last year was a moment of immense pride. I understand the nature of this award and how prestigious it is and it’s an absolute honour. It was a great opportunity for me to interact with other designers and industry people.

“The recognition and praise I received was truly overwhelming. Since winning the award I have been able to pursue my passion for jewellery design with added zeal and dedication. With every new design I try and take inspiration and aesthetics to a higher level.”

Now in its 18th year, Dubai International Jewellery Week will welcome over 350 exhibitors from 25 different countries, all who are looking to showcase their latest designs.

The show, which attracted over 20,000 visitors last year, will take place in  Halls 5 – 8 at DWTC and is one of the must-attend hottest events in the Dubai calendar.
