GSK Smoking Cessation Division collaborates with the Ministry of Health to train UAE Pharmacists 

Dubai, June 25, 2012: – GSK – Consumer Healthcare in collaboration with the Ministry of Health organized a training session for pharmacists at Al Baraha Hospital in Dubai recently. The session, which was dubbed as ‘Pharmacist Training on Smoking Cessation skills’ by the pharmaceutical was on the subject of intervention strategies for the healthcare fraternity to curb smoking and tobacco consumption, and was part of GSK Smoking Cessation Division’s awareness drive.

The session that had more than 250 pharmacists in attendance from both the private & governmental sectors, discussed topics ranging from ‘Impact of Smoking’, ‘Smoking Cessation & Mental Health’ and ‘Primary Care Intervention in smoking sensation ’.

Dr.Wedad Almaidoor, Head of National Tobacco Control in the UAE commented, “We strongly support such initiatives and believe that training the Pharmacists is not only important but the most elementary step to empower the smoking cessation efforts within the community.”

Discipline experts; Dr. Sherif Bakir, Dr. Mustafa Afifi and Dr. Ghada Fahmy rendered the lectures and the Ministry of Health Awarded 3CME points to each pharmacist in attendance.

The GSK Smoking Cessation Division’s brand – NiQuitin, had made its regional foray earlier this year and has been active since in its efforts to raise awareness against the hazards of tobacco consumption. Additionally, NiQuitin is the first brand to introduce a smokers’ support helpline 800-123-QUIT (7848), The helpline has been successfully operational since February this year.
