TO TUCK OR NOT TO TUCK, THAT IS THE QUESTION
The Rise of the Tummy Tuck
27 March, 2013: With the contradictory rise of obesity alongside the ever increasing struggle to attain ‘the perfect body’, it is little surprise that the abdominoplasty procedure, popularly known as the tummy tuck, has recently been named as one of the *top five cosmetic procedures globally.
This statistic is also reflected within the UAE where the demand for cosmetic surgery is at an all-time high. One of Dubai’s leading consultant plastic surgeons and native Brazilian, Dr. Luiz Toledo, counts the tummy tuck as one of his most widely requested procedures: “These findings clearly reflect the current cosmetic surgery trends in the UAE with both men and women able to elect for this procedure.
The rise of obesity in the UAE and across the Middle East, coupled with the ongoing media and peer pressure to achieve ‘the body beautiful’ has seen a dramatic increase in the number of people seeking assistance in shedding the excess pounds. A relatively sedentary lifestyle with easy access to a wide variety of fast foods, has led many nationalities within the Emirates to a less than ideal or healthy body.
Dr. Toledo, continues: “Abdominoplasty allows reshaping of the abdominal area that resists traditional weight-loss methods. Excessive skin and fat can be accumulated due to weight gain and a lack of exercise, pregnancy and sometimes hereditary factors as well. Tummy tuck procedures remove the excess skin and fat from the abdominal region and tightens the abdominal muscle walls.
“For patients who do not need such dramatic results the mini tummy tuck is also a popular variation. More slender patients, who do not require a muscle plication, and who do not have excessive fat deposits in the abdominal area, but however, have some excess skin can avail of this option.”
While the reasons for undergoing a tummy tuck vary from patient to patient there are clearer trends when comparing male to female candidates. While men use the procedure to shed excess skin after weight loss, women are more likely to seek cosmetic assistance following pregnancy.
“The ideal weight gain throughout the nine months of pregnancy is approximately 12kgs. However, when a woman gains more than that, as is often the case, it can prove extremely difficult for the body to recover the pre-pregnancy shape, even when following a healthy, low calorie diet and engaging in rigorous workouts. This is particularly the case when a women has had multiple pregnancies and more so when the time between pregnancies has been short,” said, Dr. Toledo.
“Before undergoing any type of cosmetic procedure, we encourage patients to look for credentials and ensure the surgeon they are considering comes highly recommended by trusted sources.”
