NM Art Gallery presents ‘Size and Scale Are Not the Same’

A group exhibition of 8 artists from Pakistan

Dubai: NM Art Gallery, a leading showcase for affordable contemporary art, is pleased to present Size and Scale Are Not the Same, a group exhibition which features 8 acclaimed artists from Pakistan, and is staged in collaboration with Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre (DUCTAC) at the Gallery of Light, where it will run from March 4 to March 10, 2014, with an opening reception on Tuesday, March 4, from 6:00 – 8:30 PM.

The exhibition has been initiated and brought together by represented artist and special guest curator Abdullah Qureshi, founder of Lahore based Gallery 39K, a project space that works to provide a platform for emerging artists as well as encourage an experimental dialogue in Pakistan.

The eight artists featured in the show are: Rakhshanda Atawar, Rabbania Shirjeel, Rabia Ajaz, Imrana Tanveer, Aleem Dad Khan, Zahra Jewanjee, Julius John and Abdullah Qureshi. Their works deal with the complex interplay between the material and the abstract, through a rich visual vocabulary, and a host of techniques and media.

There is a common driving force behind these artists, which makes their work intense and rich of meaning, and stems from the way they approach subject matters and themes, playing up specific cultural knitting, social narratives, historical contexts and popular stereotypes significant mostly in Pakistan.

“In the last decade we saw some incredible talent from the sub-continent make its way onto the international stage, being contextualized within international collections, not for their geography, but for the content and the scale of their works,” explained Maliha Bhutto Rahimtoola, who co-founded the NM Art Gallery in 2009 together with Nyla Qayoom Noorani.

“We wanted to present in Dubai this collection of works because this is an amazing talent pool that needs to be seen, appreciated and engaged with. These 8 artists each have unique and fresh ways of looking at the world, reflecting the deep visual culture from the subcontinent, and translating their revelations on to paper, canvas, and other materials they find necessary to deliver their interpretation of reality,” added Nyla Qayoom Noorani.

Size and Scale Are Not the Same will run March 4 – 10, 2014, at The Gallery of Light, Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre (DUCTAC), 2nd level, The Mall of Emirates.
