City Centre Clinic raises awareness

City Centre Clinic raises awareness of major health issues affecting UAE residents 

Employees of Majid Al Futtaim attend complimentary lectures on glaucoma and cervical cancer hosted by specialists from Dubai’s newest medical clinic

Dubai, United Arab Emirates:  City Centre Clinic, a multispecialty medical clinic managed by Majid Al Futtaim- Healthcare and Fortis Healthcare International, has been raising awareness of key health and women’s health issues through a series of complimentary lectures for Majid Al Futtaim employees and residents in the community, conducted by the clinic’s resident specialists. With a focus on glaucoma and cervical cancer, City Centre Clinic is creating a call to action for men and women in the community to take preventative action through early detection and regular screenings.

In recognition of International Glaucoma Day on March 4th, Dr. Adnan Obaid Al Rabeeah, Specialist Ophthalmologist at City Centre Clinic hosted a lecture themed: ‘Be Aware – Glaucoma is a Silent Killer’.  According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness worldwide, affecting more than 4.5 million globally with the number expected to rise by 11.2 million by 2020. Through education and early detection, Dr. Adnan stressed the importance of regular check-ups with an ophthalmologist to control the disease before major vision loss occurs.

The focus then shifted solely on women’s health in recognition of International Women’s Day on March 8th with Dr. Nirmala Raghunathan, a Specialist Obstetrics & Gynecologist who gave a lecture on ‘Cervical Cancer – Awareness and Precautions’.  Every minute a woman is diagnosed with cervical cancer worldwide, and it is the second most common and fifth deadliest cancer in women. In the UAE, according to Health Authority Abu Dhabi the rate of cervical cancer infection is 7.4 per 100,000 women, affecting those between 35-55 years of age. Prevention and was the theme, with Dr. Nirmala encouraging all women to get screened regularly to mitigate any risks.

Following the lectures, all guests were invited to participate in some initial tests performed by City Centre Clinic, checking blood pressure, blood sugar and eyes for early signs of glaucoma.
